Thank you for visiting this page. I have written it in a question and answer format:
Is Christina Duncan Stewart really your name?
It’s my most-treasured pen name, but it’s not my real name.
Why use a pen name?
My first writing career was with gardening books, and websites. When I began writing fiction, I discovered there was another Douglas Green writing science fiction and fantasy. The possibilities for confusion were simply too high. I needed a pen name.
Why Is It Your Most Treasured Pen Name?
It’s my mother’s maiden name. Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, mum came to Canada as a girl. Among other things, she loved books and passed along that love of books to both myself and my brother.
When I was eight years old (or so) our small, country library was a 20 minute drive away. And children could only take two books out at a time. Those two books would last me two to three days
Seeing how much I read, mum convinced the librarian to give me an adult card that came with unlimited borrowing privileges. I would borrow at least 8 books every two weeks and quickly read entire sections – starting of course with science fiction and fantasy, and then history. I read in the car, under the covers with a flashlight and anywhere else where I wasn’t outside playing with friends.
One way or the other, she kept books in front of our family for her entire life and when I began writing, she was my number one supporter.
Mum is deep into Alzheimer’s disease and no longer reads or seems to absorb anything but music. But all of her most treasured books sit beside my desk in my own collection where I can reach out and touch them.
I could think of no better tribute or way to remember this amazing woman, and how she encouraged both my brother and myself to reach for the sky.
Why post this information?
I believe transparency is important in this modern publishing world. My words come from somewhere inside me, and I think it only makes sense to be honest about stuff like this. And, it’s better to do this up front rather than try to disguise it as some writers may do.
Having Said That
I write from a small island in the 1000 Islands Region of Canada during the summer months and from somewhere warmer down South in the winter. Mayo (a US citizen and potter) and I (Canadian and writer) live a cross-border lifestyle with friends and family spread around the world.
I love what I do and I hope it brings a measure of entertainment and satisfaction to my readers. In my mind, that’s what really counts.
I have three gardening websites.
The other two are fiction under other names (there was already a Douglas Green writing in science fiction so I needed other names. Long story…)
- Fantasy is here using the pen name Christina Duncan Stewart. (my mother)
- Harder Sci-fi and short stories are here using the pen name D. Frank Green (my kid brother – deceased)
